ABOUT

The Living Memory of Lombok is a documentary film that strives to bring the past to life. People’s personal memories and feelings for their neighborhood have formed a largely undocumented history – a history of interconnectedness, of deep narratives that shape the lives of individuals, families, and communities. Through the eyes of Bülent Isik, Peter Hagenaar, and Sam van Zandvoord, the living memories of Lombok are launched into the flow of collective memory. Bülent, Peter, and Sam are three residents of Lombok who share what Lombok means to them. The following questions are addressed in the documentary:

-How did Lombok originate?

-How has Lombok changed over the years?

-What makes Lombok, Lombok?

A team of students, with the help of the Living Pasts facilitators, has made this documentary possible. In the past five weeks, the students immersed themselves in the neighborhood of Lombok by exploring and talking to its residents. Brainstorming sessions, interviewing residents of Lombok, editing images, sounds, and visual effects are combined into a finished product.

The documentary aims to transmit the personal history of Lombok and add personal memories to the current (documented) understanding of Lombok. These subjective histories matter because they elevate Lombok above the level of objective data.

N.B. The documentary is in Dutch but is also accessible to English speakers in the form of subtitles.
